About Clarity

The term clarity is used to identify the nature of impurities trapped in a diamond and further to estimate the quantum of such impurities present in the stone. Impurities present in a diamond are either termed as inclusions or blemishes. The term inclusion (or birthmark) refers to various types of crystallized formations, impurity clouds, colored spots or cracks inside the stone while the blemishes are irregular cuts, scratches and coarseness that appear on the surface of a diamond.
One of the crucial factors to judge the quality of a diamond is the Clarity. Lesser the inclusions and blemishes, higher will be the clarity. To examine the presence or absence of the above mentioned impurities or imperfections in a diamond, jewelers use a specific gradation technique where various grades are assigned to a Diamond Clarity scale ranging from ‘internally flawless’ to ‘included’. Presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes in a diamond is quite usual. However in normal circumstances, these are not visible to unaided eyes and can be viewed only through10X magnification or by using a jeweler’s magnifying loupe.
The clarity grades are categorized depending on three factors such as
- Whether a diamond possesses natural inclusions
- How small or large are the inclusions when magnified
- Whether the inclusions are visible to unaided eyes
Thus we get 5 different clarity grades-
- Internally Flawless (IF) – diamonds with no visible inclusions
- Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2)- diamonds with minute natural inclusions only detected under 10x magnification
- Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2)- diamonds with very small inclusions which are faintly visible when magnified
- Slightly Included (SI1, SI2, and SI3)- diamonds with small natural inclusions
- Included (I1, I2 and I3)- diamonds with larger natural inclusions which are visible to unaided eyes)
Like the other properties of Four Cs, the clarity of a diamond also influences the value of a diamond significantly. It is needless to say, diamonds with better clarity demand higher prices. You own the best diamond and the most valuable one if it belongs the highest grade i.e. Internally Flawless. An IF rated diamond though hard to find, can cost you a million! Other types of diamonds down the clarity grade line are better options for those consumers who are on budget. In many occasions, a low clarity diamond is masked by having a great cut or an attractive color. A gorgeous cut or intense coloration of a diamond helps to hide any natural flaws already present in the stone. Even the size of a Diamond matters. With a larger size, it is easy to undergo various clarity enhancement treatments that in due course, would make the diamond nearly flawless. Today, with the advancement of technology, the laser drilling and fracture filling processes have been proved effective in removing inclusions and reducing blemishes to a large extent. According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) guidelines, jewelers are required to disclose information to the consumers regarding the clarity enhancement treatments, if done. Consumers should always ask for all necessary details about the diamond before finalizing the deal.
